A King's Gambit line in which White plays 5. Ng5, intending a knight sacrifice on f7 to drive out Black's king; considered unsound by modern theory.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Allgaier Gambit
The Allgaier Gambit, once known as the Cotter Gambit, differs from the Kieseritzky by sending the knight to g5 instead of e5. After 5...h6 it has no retreat, so White sacrifices it with 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 to expose Black's king, continuing with 7. Bc4+ (Urusov Attack) or 7. d4 (Thorold Attack). Johann Allgaier analyzed it in 1819. Modern theory and engines consider it unsound, and 5...d5 offers Black a quieter route.
