The Bledow Countergambit, also known as the Bledow Variation, answers the Bishop's Gambit with 3...d5, giving the pawn back at once to free Black's game. After 4. Bxd5 Nf6, the knight hits the bishop and the e4-pawn while Black keeps the f4-pawn. The usual reply is 5. Nc3. One line runs 5...Bb4 6. Nf3 Bxc3 7. dxc3 c6 8. Bc4 Qxd1+ 9. Kxd1 O-O 10. Bxf4 Nxe4, reaching an equal queenless position. Engines judge the position roughly balanced, and it is seldom played.
