About the Paulsen Defense

The Paulsen Defense, 5...Bg7, puts the bishop on the long diagonal. It neither defends g4 nor counterattacks e4. It sets a trap if the knight takes the pawn, though White has more than one way to sidestep it. In practice 6. Nxg4 is by far the most common reply, and Black has scored well after it. The less frequent 6. d4 is also among the engine's preferred moves. Engines assess the position as roughly balanced, and the line is rarely seen.
