About the Rice Gambit

The Rice Gambit departs from the Kieseritzky Gambit with 8. O-O, played instead of the usual 8. d4. White leaves the e5-knight en prise and castles so a rook can reach e1 against Black's lagging development. Isaac Rice promoted it through theme tournaments around the turn of the 20th century, with Lasker, Chigorin and Marshall among the players. After 8...Bxe5 9.
