About the Brentano Defense

In the Brentano Defense, Black answers White's knight sacrifice in the Muzio Gambit with 5...d5 rather than capturing at once. The idea is to give back a pawn so that the d-pawn's advance blunts White's c4-bishop and opens lines for Black's own pieces, with 6...gxf3 to follow. This differs from the usual treatment, in which Black takes the knight immediately and follows up with ...Qf6 or ...Qe7. Play stays sharp, with White's initiative set against Black's extra material.
