About the Silberschmidt Defense

The Silberschmidt Defense, 6...Nh6, also called the Silberschmidt Variation, covers f7 with the knight instead of counterattacking as in the Cochrane Gambit or Viennese Variation. Though natural and popular, it is regarded as less precise than those alternatives, and engines judge the position roughly level. White usually replies 7. d4, supporting the e5-knight, after which Black generally plays 7...d6 or 7...f3. The tempting 7. d3 blunders the knight to 7...d6, since d3 is no longer a retreat square.
