About the Viennese Variation

The Viennese Variation, 6...Nc6, develops with tempo against the e5-knight and willingly concedes the f7-pawn for an attack on the king stranded on f1. The usual 7. Nxf7 traps the h8-rook but runs into 7...b5 8. Bb3 Nh6 9. Nxh8 Bc5, leaving White's king in serious danger. The most accurate reply is 7. d4, after which 7...Nxe5 8. dxe5 f3 obliges 9. Bf4. Engines give Black a clear advantage, and Black wins most games.
