A King's Gambit Declined line in which Black follows the Classical 2...Bc5 with 4...Nd7, a compact setup that reinforces the e5-pawn.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Hanham Variation
The Hanham Variation arises when Black answers the Classical line 2...Bc5 3. Nf3 d6 4. Nc3 with 4...Nd7 instead of developing the queen's knight to c6 or f6. From d7 the knight adds a defender to e5 against fxe5, so the pawns on d6 and e5 and the bishop on c5 stay in place. The cost is that the c8-bishop is temporarily shut in and Black's kingside development is slower.
