About the Schubert Variation

The Schubert Variation arises when White answers the Norwalde Variation with 3. Nc3, leaves the f-pawn en prise, and meets 3...Qxf4 with 4. d4. The pawn advance builds a broad center with pawns on d4 and e4 and opens the c1-h6 diagonal for the dark-squared bishop against the advanced queen. In exchange for the pawn, White gains a half-open f-file and the prospect of further development with tempo while the black queen remains exposed.
