About the Symmetrical Variation

The Symmetrical Variation arises when White meets 3...exf4 with the quiet 4. Nf3 rather than the immediate 4. Qh5+. Both sides then develop identically. After 4...d5 5. d4 Bd6 6. Bd3, the d-pawns and bishops face each other, the e-file is open, and each side has an advanced f-pawn on the opponent's half of the board. Material is level, and the play centers on the open e-file and those two exposed f-pawns.
