The Burgess Line is Black's 7...c6 in the Modern Defense of the Averbakh King's Indian, a flexible move that answers 7. Qd2 by covering d5 and b5.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Burgess Line
The Burgess Line arises when Black meets 7. Qd2 in the Modern Defense of the Averbakh with 7...c6. Instead of striking at once with ...e5 or ...c5, Black takes control of d5 and b5 and keeps the queenside flexible. The a6-knight can then reroute via c7, and ...b5 becomes possible later. White keeps the Bg5 and Qd2 battery, which can support Bh6 against Black's castled king.
