A King's Indian Averbakh line in which Black meets 6. Bg5 with the quiet 6...a6, preparing queenside expansion instead of challenging the pin.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Spanish Defense
The Spanish Defense answers the Averbakh pin with 6...a6, a waiting move that leaves the g5-bishop unchallenged. It neither questions the bishop with ...h6 nor strikes at once with ...c5. Instead, Black prepares queenside expansion with ...b5, possibly combined with ...c5 to pressure the c4-pawn. Because ...e5 remains tactically awkward while the f6-knight is pinned, White keeps the choice among Qd2, Nf3 and f4 setups.
