About the Blockade Line

The Blockade Line arises after 8. d5 Na5 9. Nd2 c5 10. Qc2, when Black replies 10...e5 and fixes the center. Black's pawns on c5, d6 and e5 face White's d5 and c4, and the e5-pawn shuts the long diagonal of the g7-bishop. The rim knight on a5 and the possible ...b5 break still aim at c4. With the center fixed, the play is decided on the wings rather than by central breaks.
