A sideline of the King's Indian Fianchetto Variation in which Black pairs ...c5 with an early queen check from a5 before castling or playing ...d6.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Pterodactyl Variation
The Pterodactyl Variation departs from the usual 4...O-O or 4...d6 of the Fianchetto Variation. Black strikes at d4 at once with 4...c5 and, after 5. Bg2, gives the check 5...Qa5+. White must deal with it before castling. Black has played neither ...d6 nor ...O-O, so the structure stays flexible, with Benoni-style pressure on the center from c5 and the g7-bishop. It is a rare alternative to the established Fianchetto systems.
