Train it in TheoriaAbout the Modern System
The Modern System is White's 9. Nd2 in the Mar del Plata main line of the Orthodox Variation. The knight retreats to support the queenside break c4-c5, while Black reroutes the f6-knight so the f-pawn can advance. Black usually answers 9...Ne8 or 9...Nd7. The knight on d7 is often considered better placed because it helps restrain c4-c5. 9...a5 is a less common alternative. Engines give White a slight edge, and results are nearly level.
