About the Positional Defense

The Positional Defense handles the Orthodox Variation with ...e5 and ...Nbd7. The move order shown starts from the Old Indian (1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 d6 3. Nc3 Nbd7) and only later adds the fianchetto. On d7 the knight guards e5, so the pawn stays protected if White exchanges on e5. It also leaves the c-pawn free to advance to c6, at the cost of some activity compared with ...Nc6 lines. Engines give White a slight edge, and White scores a little better in practice.

The most common reply is 8. d5, the Closed Line. It fixes the center and leads to the usual race, with White expanding on the queenside and Black preparing ...f5. White can instead keep the tension with 8. Be3 or 8. Re1. Another option is 8. dxe5, which releases the center for a symmetrical pawn structure. The line labeled Main Line continues 8. Re1 c6 9. Bf1 a5. Black gains queenside space and waits for White to commit, while the bishop on f1 supports the e4-pawn against pressure.
