About the Keres Defense

The Keres Defense is a branch of the Petrosian Variation in which Black answers 7. d5 with 7...Nbd7 and meets the pin 8. Bg5 by driving the bishop back with 8...h6 9. Bh4 g5 10. Bg3. After 10...Nh5, eyeing the bishop and the f4-square, White replies 11. h4, attacking the advanced g5-pawn at once and seeking to open lines against the loosened kingside. Chasing the bishop with ...h6 and ...g5 reflects early practice in the Petrosian Variation.
