About the Ruban Variation

The Ruban Variation is a Panno-type line of the Sämisch. After 6...Nc6 7. Nge2, Black plays 7...Rb8 immediately instead of first inserting 7...a6, as the Panno does. The rook move prepares queenside expansion with ...b5, normally backed by ...a6. Black keeps the choice between that plan and the central break ...e5 until White's setup, and in particular the side the White king castles on, becomes clear.
