The Gunderam Gambit arises when Black answers 3. Bc4 with 3...f5, a break that Gerhart Gunderam recommended after the queen move 2...Qe7, treating it as a delayed Latvian Gambit. The queen on e7 guards e5 and eyes the e-file but blocks the f8-bishop. Gunderam analyzed the sharp 4. exf5 d5 5. Bxd5 Nf6 6. Bb3 Bxf5, in which Black is a pawn down in return for quick development and open lines.
