The Norwalde Gambit is a rare MacLeod Attack sideline in which Black answers White's early 3. Qh5 with 3...Bd6, guarding e5 and leaving d5 unprotected.

The Norwalde Gambit arises when White meets 2...d5 in the MacLeod Attack with the early queen sortie 3. Qh5, which attacks the e5-pawn. Instead of taking on e4 or protecting d5, Black answers 3...Bd6. The bishop guards e5, but the d5-pawn stays exposed to capture by White's e-pawn. Black's compensation is development and the chance to harass a queen that has come out early.
