Train it in TheoriaAbout the Tortoise Opening
The Tortoise Opening, 1. e4 e5 2. Bd3, develops the king's bishop to a square where it protects e4 but stands in front of the d2-pawn. With the d-pawn blocked, White cannot easily play d3 or d4 or develop the c1-bishop, so the bishop usually has to move again before the queenside comes into play. The move poses Black no immediate problems and appears mostly in casual and online play.
Black has several natural replies. The most frequent is 2...Nc6, followed by 2...Nf6 and 2...Bc5. The knight move to f6 is a direct answer. It attacks e4 and prepares ...d5, a central break that leaves the d3-bishop exposed and poorly placed. Black can also develop normally and take the center with ...d5 later. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced, with a very slight preference for Black, and gives 2...Nf6, 2...Nc6 and 2...g6 as its top choices. In practice Black scores noticeably better than White, and draws are rare.
