About the Mellon Gambit

The Mellon Gambit is a Black response to the Wayward Queen Attack. Rather than relying on the usual ...Nf6, Black guards f7 with 3...Nh6, blunts the queen with 4...g6, and adds 5...f6 to cement e5. Only then does 6...d5 hit the center. The d5-pawn is attacked by the e4-pawn and the c4-bishop but defended only by the queen, so White can accept the offered pawn.
