The Foltys Variation arises after 3. Nxe5 Qf6 4. Nc4 fxe4, where White answers with 5. d3. This strikes at the e4-pawn immediately rather than attacking it with 5. Nc3. That knight move also covers d5 against Black's intended ...d5, which would complete a broad center. Material is level after 5. d3, and Black is to move. Black must decide how to handle the attacked e4-pawn, with the queen already committed to f6.
