White's Lobster Gambit answers the Latvian Gambit with 3. g4, offering a wing pawn instead of taking on e5 or f5; a rare curiosity that favors Black.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Lobster Gambit
The Lobster Gambit, 3. g4, ignores both attacked pawns and offers a third. White hopes for 3...fxg4, when 4. Nxe5 regains material and the game is near equality. The better reply is 3...fxe4, opening the f-file and keeping the kingside pawns intact. After 4. Nxe5 d6 the knight is driven back and Black stands better. The line appears very rarely and counts among the curiosities of Latvian theory.
