About the Norwegian Defense

The Norwegian Defense, also called the North Sea Defense, puts the knight on f6 before fianchettoing the bishop. It attacks e4 at once but lets White gain time with 3. e5, the most popular reply. After 3...Nh5 the knight takes an unusual corkscrew path toward the second rank, and Magnus Carlsen has dubbed this line the "Norwegian Rat". If White chases it with 4. g4, the knight drops back to g7, where it covers the kingside and supports the g7-bishop's future post. Against 4. Be2, which threatens to trap or exchange the knight, Black can retreat or choose the Norwegian Gambit, 4...d6, offering a pawn to hit the e5-spearhead. Carlsen used the gambit against Michael Adams at the 2010 Khanty-Mansiysk Olympiad.

White's second main option, 3. Nc3, almost as common as 3. e5, keeps the center intact. Black then either enters the Pirc with 3...d6 or continues independently with 3...d5. 3. Bd3 is a less frequent alternative. Engines give White a clear advantage, though online results stay fairly close.
