Train it in TheoriaAbout the Pterodactyl Variation Accepted
This position arises after Black meets White's Averbakh-style setup with pawns on c4 and e4 by striking with the Pterodactyl thrust 4...c5. Here White has the knight on f3 rather than c3 after starting with 1. Nf3. After 5. dxc5 White is a pawn up, but the c-pawns are doubled. The check 5...Qa5+ prepares to recover the pawn on c5, with the queen and the fianchettoed g7-bishop aimed at White's queenside. White must answer the check before deciding how to defend c5.
