About the Macieja System

The Macieja System is a branch of the Berlin Variation. After 5. dxc5 O-O 6. a3 Bxc5 7. Nf3, Black plays 7...b6 to prepare a fianchetto of the light-squared bishop on b7. The early pawn exchange leaves the c- and d-files half-open, with White's c4-pawn and Black's e6-pawn as the remaining central pawns. From b7 the bishop would join the struggle for e4, a central theme of the Nimzo-Indian, while its partner already stands on c5.
