About the Smyslov Variation

The Smyslov Variation is the 8...Qe7 branch of the Exchange line in the Gligoric System, and Wikipedia describes it as one of Black's rarer eighth moves. It takes its name from world champion Vasily Smyslov. The queen steps off the d-file so that a rook can come to d8, adding pressure along the half-open file to the tension created by ...c5 against d4. The line belongs to ECO code E54.
