About the English Hybrid

Reached via 4. Nf3 c5 5. g3, this line clears the center quickly. After 5...cxd4 6. Nxd4 O-O 7. Bg2 d5 8. cxd5 Nxd5, both d-pawns have gone and the c- and d-files are open. Black keeps only the e6 pawn in the center. Material is level. The g2 bishop bears down the long diagonal on the knight at d5 and on the queenside. Black still pins the c3 knight and relies on quick development rather than central pawns.
