About the Botvinnik Variation

This position arises when Black meets 4. f3 with 4...d5 and White replies 5. a3, forcing 5...Bxc3+ 6. bxc3. After 6...c5 7. e3 O-O 8. cxd5 Nxd5, White has removed the weak c4-pawn and is left with a compact c3-d4-e3 center and an isolated a3-pawn. The bishop pair and the f3-pawn support an eventual e4, which gains time against the d5-knight. Black uses the half-open d-file and the c5-pawn to pressure d4.
