About the Romanovsky Variation

The Romanovsky Variation arises from the 4. f3 (Kmoch) move order: 4...d5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 c5 7. cxd5 Nxd5 8. dxc5. Black does not hurry to regain the c5-pawn and plays 8...f5, which rules out e4 and keeps the knight secure on d5. White is a pawn up, but the isolated pawns on a3, c3 and c5 give Black clear targets for recovering it. The line is rarely seen.
