A rare gambit in the Nimzowitsch Defense where Black plays 3...a6, leaving d5 to be taken and planning to regain the pawn with knight maneuvers.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Brandics Gambit
The Brandics Gambit, 3...a6, leaves the d5-pawn unprotected, and White's principal reply is to take it with 4. exd5. Black then tries to win the pawn back by moving the knight to b4, developing with ...Nf6 and capturing with ...Nbxd5. The pawn on a6 is useful in this scheme because it prevents Bb5+, a check that would be awkward for Black while White's pawn still stands on d5.
