A rarely played gambit in the Nimzowitsch Defense where Black meets 3. Nc3 with 3...e5, striking at the center at the cost of a pawn.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Heinola-Deppe Gambit
Instead of capturing on e4 or holding the tension, Black answers 3. Nc3 with 3...e5, setting both central pawns against White's d4 and e4. The move offers material, since White can take on d5 or on e5. 4. exd5, which also hits the knight on c6, is the usual reply, ahead of 4. dxe5 and the calmer 4. Nf3. The engine assigns White a slight edge, and White scores somewhat better in practice.
