About the Berger Variation

The Berger Variation comes from the 6...Be7 branch of the Classical Attack. Black postpones castling with 7. O-O Nc6 8. Re1 Bg4 9. c3 f5 10. Nbd2. The bishop pins the f3-knight, and 9...f5 gives the e4-knight pawn support, leaving Black with pawns on d5 and f5. In return, e5 and e6 are loosened. Black's king remains uncastled on the open e-file, where White's rook already stands, and 10. Nbd2 prepares to challenge the knight.
