About the Chinese Gambit

The Chinese Gambit is a branch of the Staunton Variation of the Marshall Variation. After 9. Re1, Black plays 9...Bg4, pinning the f3 knight instead of reinforcing the e4 knight or resolving the tension on d5. The bishop develops with tempo and indirectly undermines d4, but the d5 pawn and the centralized knight remain exposed to White's c4 pawn and the rook on the open e-file.
