About the Tarrasch Variation

The Tarrasch Variation is a branch of the Marshall Variation of the Classical Attack. After 6...Bd6 7. O-O O-O 8. c4, Black plays 8...Bg4 instead of the Staunton Variation's 8...c6. Rather than shoring up d5 with a pawn, Black develops the light-squared bishop and pins the knight on f3, which indirectly pressures d4. White's c4 still strikes at d5, so the game turns on the tension around that pawn and the knight on e4.
