A Petrov's Defense line in which White answers the advanced knight on e4 with 5. Qe2, pressuring it along the e-file before recovering the d4-pawn.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Steinitz Variation
Steinitz's 5. Qe2 trains the queen on the e4-knight, and through it on the black king, instead of regaining the d4-pawn at once with 5. Qxd4. White plans to recapture on d4 with the knight. Steinitz recommended the move in his 1889 book. However, the check 5...Bb4+ is regarded as sufficient for Black to equalize. The Bardeleben Variation, 5...Nc5 6. Nxd4 Nc6, is another way to meet it.
