A rare gambit in the Modern Attack of Petrov's Defense in which White develops the bishop to b5 instead of recapturing the d4-pawn at once.

The Tal Gambit, 5. Bb5, is a rarer alternative to 5. Qxd4 and 5. Qe2. White leaves the d4-pawn en prise. The bishop pins the d7-pawn, so Black cannot support the e4-knight with ...d5. A natural answer is 5...c6. On c6, though, the pawn no longer guards d6, and it takes the c6-square from Black's knight. After 6. Qxd4, White's queen therefore cannot be harassed by ...Nc6.
