About the Jaenisch Variation

The Jaenisch Variation is White's most direct way to restore material in the Philidor Countergambit, where it usually arises through the move order 3. d4 f5 4. Bc4 exd4. Instead of the developing 6. O-O, White grabs the h-pawn at once, leaving the knight offside on h7 but bearing on f8. Black's critical reply is 6...Ng4, and after 7. Nxf8 Kxf8 8. Qxd4 Nc6 the position is regarded as unclear.
