An offbeat, dubious reply to the Philidor's Nimzowitsch Variation in which White plays 4. Ng5, giving up the d4-pawn to set traps against f7.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Locock Variation
The Locock Variation answers the Nimzowitsch Variation, 3...Nf6, with 4. Ng5. The knight moves a second time and the d4-pawn is left en prise in exchange for pressure on f7. The move is considered dubious and relies on traps. After 4...h6 5. dxe5, the natural 5...dxe5? loses to 6. Qxd8+ Kxd8 7. Nxf7+. If Black takes with 4...exd4, then 5. Bc4 targets f7, and after 5...d5 6. exd5 the recapture 6...Nxd5? is an error because the knight is pinned against f7.
