About the Kurajica Variation

With 6. Be3 White develops the dark-squared bishop before committing to Bd3 or Be2, adding support to d4 and keeping options such as queenside castling and the e4-e5 push in reserve. The line was first examined in depth in the 1970s, when Bojan Kurajica, Yuri Balashov and Alexander Beliavsky played it, and it tends toward sharp positions. Black most often answers with 6...Bg4, 6...Nbd7 or 6...Nc6, aiming for ...e5 or ...c5. Results are close to even and engines see only a slight edge for White.
