A rare reply to the Polish Opening in which Black develops the king's knight to h6. The position is roughly balanced, and play rarely follows much theory.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Karniewski Variation
The Karniewski Variation, 1. b4 Nh6, meets the Polish Opening by developing the king's knight to the rim instead of contesting the center with a pawn. On h6 the knight leaves the f-pawn free to advance, but it puts no pressure on b4 or on the long diagonal. White most often replies 2. Bb2, while 2. e4 and 2. c4 are less common. The line is very rarely played, and engines rate the position as roughly balanced.
