About the Wolferts Gambit

The Wolferts Gambit answers 1. b4 e5 2. Bb2 with 2...c5. Black does not defend the attacked e5-pawn and instead challenges the b4-pawn, offering material. The usual reply is 3. bxc5, which removes White's flank pawn from b4. 3. Bxe5 grabs the central pawn instead, while 3. b5 keeps the pawn and gains queenside space. Engines rate the position as roughly balanced, but the line is rarely played, and White scores well in practice.
