The Austriadactylus Western arises when White answers 1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 with 3. f4, setting up a broad pawn center on d4, e4 and f4. Black challenges it immediately with 3...c5, and after 4. Nf3 the check 4...Qa5+ obliges White to deal with the king before settling the tension between the c5- and d4-pawns. The queen and the g7-bishop then work together against the dark squares that f4 has loosened.
