This line of the Pterodactyl Defense combines the Anhanguera bishop development with a full pawn center. White adds c4 to the e4 and d4 pawns, then answers 4...d6 with 5. Be3, which reinforces d4 against ...cxd4 and the bishop on g7. Black replies with 5...Qa5. Because d2 is still empty, the queen pins the knight on c3 to the king and adds pressure on the dark squares around White's center.
