A gambit form of the Pterodactyl Defense in which Black leaves the c5-pawn en prise and plays ...Qa5, pinning the c3-knight to pressure the dark squares.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Quetzalcoatlus Gambit
This line arises from the Eastern move order with an early c4. After 5. dxc5, Black does not recapture with ...dxc5 and instead plays 5...Qa5. The queen pins the knight on c3 to the king and lines up with the g7-bishop against White's queenside. White is a pawn up for the moment but has doubled c-pawns. Black is relying on piece activity and dark-square pressure to compensate for the material.
