Train it in TheoriaAbout the Smyslov Variation
The Smyslov Variation arises in the old main line of the Alekhine System, after 7. Qe2 b5 8. Bb3 Bb7 9. Rd1 Nbd7 10. Nc3. Here Black puts the dark-squared bishop on d6 instead of moving the queen. The queen moves 10...Qb8, 10...Qb6 and 10...Qc7 are all more popular, and White generally meets them with 11. d5. Against 10...Bd6 the usual reply is 11. e4, with the rook on d1 and queen on e2 supporting the central push.
