The Balogh Variation is one of Black's named replies to the Modern Line of the Albin Countergambit, 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. Nbd2. With 5...Qe7, Black adds the queen to the knight's attack on the e5-pawn, which only the f3-knight defends, and so threatens to win back the gambit pawn. The queen is also placed on the half-open e-file. Other replies in this position are the Janowski setup, 5...f6, and the Krenosz setup, 5...Bg4.
