About the Haberditz Variation

The Haberditz Variation is the forcing main line of the Gusev Countergambit, reached by 3...Nf6 4. e4 Nxe4 5. dxc5 Qa5+. Even after collecting the e4-pawn, Black remains a pawn down. The queen check from a5 also bears on the c5-pawn, so Black aims to win back material while White's king is disturbed and the c-, d- and e-files stand half-open. The name recalls Hans Haberditz, one of the Austrian analysts of 2...c5.
