A flexible Queen's Gambit Declined line in which Black answers the Three Knights with 4...Nbd7, delaying the choice of setup for the dark-squared bishop.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Barmen Variation
The Barmen Variation arises from the Three Knights position of the Queen's Gambit Declined, often reached via 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5 4. Nc3. With 4...Nbd7 Black reinforces the center and prepares the freeing breaks ...c5 and ...e5 without yet deciding where the f8-bishop goes. The knight placement also keeps ...c6 available for a Semi-Slav-type structure, so Black can choose a setup after seeing White's fifth move. The drawback is that the knight blocks the c8-bishop's path through d7, which makes the problem bishop harder to activate.
The most frequent reply by far is 5. Bg5, which pins the f6-knight and usually leads to Orthodox-style positions. 5. Bf4 is the second choice and gives White the best practical results of the main options, while 5. e3 is a quieter development. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced with a slight lean toward White, and White scores marginally better in practice.
